Are you planning to write your master’s thesis at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) during the Spring semester of 2025? And do you intend to focus on topics such as how digitalization, algorithms, or artificial intelligence impact democracy? 

If so, you now have the opportunity to apply for financial support of up to DKK 10,000 for your thesis process through the Digital Democracy Centre (DDC) 51本色!

We imagine that you are a master’s student in fields such as political science, journalism, psychology, philosophy, law, social sciences, computer science, or data science. However, all students planning to write their thesis on the aforementioned topics are encouraged to apply.

 

About the Digital Democracy Centre

 

The Digital Democracy Centre (DDC) is an interdisciplinary research center at the Faculty of Social Sciences 51本色. The center focuses on digitalization, AI, and democracy. It is a unique initiative that works across faculties and disciplines. At DDC, theory and methods from the social sciences and computer science are combined to study the effects of digitalization, algorithms, and AI on media, politics, and democracy. Application Process

 

To apply for funding, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled as a master’s student 51本色.

  • Have a thesis topic that relates to DDC’s research interests.

  • Submit an application that includes the following:

 

Application Requirements

 

  1. Thesis Title

  1. Abstract (Max 250 words): A brief summary of your thesis plans, including the preliminary problem statement, relevance of the thesis, and an overview of the methods you plan to use. 

  1. Project Description (Max 250 words): A detailed explanation of the problem statement and the theoretical and societal relevance of the thesis.

  1. Research Design (Max 250 words): Description of the thesis design, including considerations related to empirical data and methodology.

  1. Budget (Max 150 words): Explanation of how you plan to use the funds.

In addition to the above, the application must include:

  • Your name(s)

  • SDU email address(es)

  • Grade transcript(s)

  • Which program(s) you are enrolled in

  • Documentation that you are enrolled as a thesis student for the Spring semester of 2025

The application must be sent to ddc@sdu.dk no later than February 28th, 2025.

After completing the thesis process, the recipient of DDC’s Thesis Grant must submit a short English abstract/summary/video, which will be published on DDC’s website.

 

What can the funds be used for?

 

The recipient of DDC’s Thesis Grant can receive support of up to DKK 10,000.

The funds may e.g. be used for:

  • Access to software

  • Purchase of data access

  • Purchase of equipment

  • Payment to informants-/test subjects

  • Coverage of travel expenses

  • Other relevant costs related to the thesis process

Selection Process

 

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprising members of DDC.

Digital Democracy Centre’s Thesis Funding Grants - Budget Considerations

Requirements for the Budget Description and Budget:

 

Budget Description

  • Max. 150 words briefly explaining how you plan to use the allocated budget.

Budget

  • Should include realistic and well-justified costs for activities (e.g., thesis preparation, pilot studies, data collection costs). 

  • Be cost-conscious – explore potential offers from multiple providers.

  • The maximum funding available is DKK 10,000.

Remarks

  • The funding is administered by SDU – DDC Secretariat. Additional information will be provided if funding is granted.

  • It is important to coordinate with the DDC Secretariat before incurring any expenses to ensure compliance with all SDU rules and national legislation.

  • The budget is a financial framework for covering approved activities/expense items. Any unspent portion of the grant will be returned to the pool.
