In recent years, both in history and the social sciences, there has been growing interest in the so-called "history of lived experiences." How have fundamental societal institutions such as religion, the nation, democracy, or the welfare state been experienced at different times? Or more specifically, how have individuals in care experienced the welfare state's institutions? How was 19th-century nationalism experienced in the peasant homes of the time? How have different social groups experienced the rise of the market economy?

​We are fortunate to have Professor Pirjo Markkola from Tampere University visiting the Nordic Humanities Center 51±¾É« in November 2024. Professor Markkola is the co-founder and leader of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in History of Experiences (HEX). She will begin the master class with an introduction to what lived history is and how the large research group in Tampere works with this approach.
​Professor Markkola will also lead a discussion based on two SDU-based research projects that have been heavily inspired by the work at the Finnish centre.
