Folkem酶de 2025: In the Shadow of War: Denmark, the Nordic Region and the Return of Geopolitics

Nordic Humanities Center is organizing a debate at this year's Folkem酶de about the Nordic Region in a New World Order, based on historical and current examples.

The war in Ukraine has brought geopolitics back to the Nordic debate, and the Nordic Region is now in a time of turmoil, where old ideals of neutrality are being challenged.

At the same time, Trump's entry into Washington has shown that the so-called American world order is breaking up, and that we can no longer count on old alliances. The Americans' interest in Greenland is just one example of many. In this conversation, four experts will enlighten us on the new geopolitical situation in the Nordic Region, based on historical and current examples.

Participants:

Niels Bjerre-Poulsen, Associate Professor of American Studies, SDU
Tea Sindb忙k Andersen, Associate Professor of East European Studies, UCPH
Julie Arnfred Bojesen, Head of the Ukrainian-Danish Youth Center, Kiev and Mykolaiv
Rasmus Sinding S酶ndergaard, Senior Researcher, DIIS, Danish Institute for International Studies

Topics in the debate:

- How war affects states' memory and self-understanding
- What the war in Ukraine has meant internally in Ukraine, Russia and surrounding countries.
- What opportunities do small Nordic states have for acting in the new world order.
- How Greenland's strategic importance has developed to this day.

The debate will take place in the University of Copenhagen tent at Indermolen in Allinge Harbour - G35
